The opening of the domestic air transport market is set to bring harsher competition to Chinese skies in 2008. Greater route admission will spur air giants to expand their presence in China. Even those government-monopolized routes will inevitably witness more competitors. Fueled by positive factors including RMB appreciation, 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 World Expo Shanghai, there will be an eruptive growth for civil aviation transportation in China. Despite these, the consistent increase in international oil prices are placing airlines under heavy pressure. How to improve the profi t of the new routes against the background of rising cost has become a concern. Therefore, the airlines are adjusting their strategies for growth. In addition, the direct chartered flights between Taiwan and Mainland China and the rise of private airlines, low cost carriers and joint venture carriers demonstrate that China’s air transportation market is becoming mature with increased competition.
